What Makes a Sudoku Hard?

Guide2 / 4

It's not the number of givens — it's the techniques required.

Two puzzles with the same number of clues can be worlds apart, and a 30-given board can be far nastier than a 25-given one. Difficulty lives in what the solve path demands of you, and that is exactly how this site grades every puzzle.

Givens are a poor ruler

The clue count is the most visible number on a fresh board, and the least informative. The theoretical minimum for a unique sudoku is 17 givens — and plenty of 17-clue puzzles fall to simple scanning, while some 30-clue boards require chains. What matters is not how many cells are filled but how much of the deduction work the givens have already done for you.

Sparseness does have one honest effect: with more open cells there is simply more to track, so equal-technique puzzles feel heavier when they're emptier. Our first three tiers use exactly that — all of them are solvable with singles alone, and only the openness of the board grows.

The solve path decides

Our grader solves every candidate puzzle with the same technique catalog you can learn here, always applying the simplest technique that works. The hardest step on that path is the puzzle's grade: a puzzle whose worst moment is a naked pair is a pair-tier puzzle, no matter how mean it looks.

The campaign tiers map directly onto this: locked candidates cap tier 4, pairs tier 5, triples tier 6, X-Wing and Y-Wing tier 7, the big fish tier 8, finned fish and single-digit patterns tier 9, and coloring, uniqueness logic and chains tier 10.

Within a tier

Two puzzles with the same hardest technique still differ. The grader breaks ties with three ingredients: how often the tier's own techniques are needed (a board demanding four X-Wings outranks one needing a single), how sparse the board is, and how long the whole solve path runs. That score orders the twenty levels of each tier from friendly to boss.

Beyond the catalog

Some generated puzzles resist the entire catalog — solving them requires trial-and-error or techniques beyond our list. The generator simply discards those for the campaign: every level you meet here is guaranteed solvable with taught techniques, all the way to the tier-10 bosses.
